Performs a variety of specialized tasks for the deaf or severely hard-of-hearing students by using oral and manual communication to insure an understanding of classroom school activities.

Acts as interpreter using oral and manual forms of communication for deaf or severely hard-of-hearing pupils.

Interprets educational information and directives presented by the teacher.

Interprets students' communicated needs orally to the teacher.

Assists the teacher in all communication needs.

Observes and reports on student progress.

Assists in the supervision of students at the direction of the teacher.

Performs a variety of clerical tasks in preparing classroom materials and maintaining records and files.

Performs related work as required.
 Employment Standards:

Knowledge of:

Manual alphabet and total communication sign language.

Physical and emotional characteristics and needs of aurally handicapped students.

Classroom procedures and rules of conduct.

Ability to:

Communicate fluently in the language of the deaf.

Establish and maintain close, cooperative working relationships.

Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Observe, evaluate, and report on students' progress.

Minimum Requirements:

Three months of experience as an interpreter for the deaf using oral and manual forms of communication.

Desirable Qualifications:

Specialized courses in manual communication.

Written and oral proficiency in an additional language.

License or Certificate:

Certification by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or equivalent, or if providing cued speech interpreting services, by any certifying body recognized by the National Cued Speech Association (NCSA).

Hiring for this position is on as-needed basis and could occur at anytime during a school year. There is no regular exam or hiring schedule. As needed, a review of applicants' experience and qualifications is conducted periodically. Based on that evaluation, a limited number of applicants whose qualifications best meet the current needs of the District will be invited to participate in the next step of the process. The examination will include a technical interview.
