Job Description

Overall Job Objective

The Position

CERT Volunteer - Ontario Fire Department

This is not a volunteer firefighter or a firefighter training position.
The City of Ontario is looking for volunteers to serve on the Ontario Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Ontario CERT members are volunteers who will be requested to assist in an emergency or disaster operation. Additionally, team members will be expected to serve on at least two community preparedness events a year and participate in trainings and other events as available.

Specialty details may include assignments to Listos (Spanish language preparedness) or Emergency Communications Service (ECS) for licensed amateur radio operators.
Volunteers are required to have graduated from CERT Basic Training through the Ontario Fire Department or another jurisdiction's program.
This is a volunteer position with the City of Ontario. The City provides no compensation for the services performed by volunteers. Volunteers are not entitled to any benefits from the City, including but not limited to Worker's Compensation benefits. The City of Ontario Fire Department is unable to assist individuals seeking placement for mandatory community service.

Examples of Essential Functions


  1. Participates in special events, planned operations, disaster exercises, training activities, and emergency response activities.
  2. Prepares and presents preparedness materials to residents, businesses, and other organizations. 
  3. Organizes, inventory, and maintains Community Emergency Response Team trailers, supplies, and equipment.
  4. Moves and maintains supplies and safety equipment which may weigh up to 50 lbs.

Qualification Guidelines


Must be 18 years of age or older. Must be willing to work a minimum of 2 public education events per year. Volunteers may be required to work on weekends and/or nights for public education events.


Must have completed CERT Basic Training prior to application.
Required certifications must be attached to your application.

Background Check

Candidate must demonstrate the ability to successfully complete a fingerprint review.

Supplemental Information

This is a volunteer (unpaid) position with the City of Ontario. As such, the City of Ontario's General Process for employment does not apply to this position. All volunteers are required to pass a criminal background check. Criminal arrest and/or conviction information as well as subsequent arrest notifications will be obtained from the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and/or Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
