The job class of Treasury Clerk is part of a series specification, which is the entry-level class of the series. Incumbents generally have limited experience and perform routine tasks within clear guidelines; may work on more varied and difficult assignments, under close supervision, in prepara­tion for assignment of Intermediate Treasury Clerk duties.

This series specification describes three levels which perform customer service cash handling, and account clerical work involving the initiation and ter­mination of municipal utility services, billing and payment for those services and payment for other City services; and performs other specifically related work as required.

The following duties are typical of this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the duties and/or may be required to perform specific additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Assists customers in person and on the phone; performs cashiering duties; accepts applications for new utility services and disconnections and prepares appropriate work orders; audits meter readings and questions inconsistent readings; inputs data to establish accounts; corrects billing errors and closes accounts on computer; audits bills; stuffs envelopes; arranges payment schedules for customers with past due accounts; runs totals of cash and receipts; posts appropriate accounts; prepares listings of past due accounts; receives customer complaints, referring to supervisor as appropriate; prepares hand-written warrants, journal vouchers, and bank deposits; operates switchboard; and performs other related work as required.
PERIPHERAL FUNCTIONS: Requests re-reads; drives car on City business.


Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates an abi­lity to perform the duties of the position. The typical qualifying entrance background is:
Education/Experience: Some account clerical office experience with customer relations contact.
Knowledge of: Office equipment, procedures and practices; Business mathematics; Basic cashiering.
Ability to: Make mathematical computations quickly and accurately; Make change and operate cash register; Operate a computer terminal; Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Type accurately from clear copy; Work cooperatively with the public and co-workers; Learn to operate a computer terminal; Maintain accurate records and files.
License Required: Possession of a valid and appropriate California driver's license may be required of some positions in this class.

Environmental Conditions: Work in a temperature controlled office. Constantly work with computers and indoors. Frequently work alone and with others. Rarely work around machinery.
