Job Description

The Student Support Services Coach will coordinate with other offices in developing processes to support participants of this TRIO Student Support Services project and track their involvement in services such as career counseling and tutoring. The Coach will host one-on-one meetings to provide academic success coaching and course selection assistance for participants in a manner that motivates participants to draw on their strengths for setting, refining, and attaining personal, academic, financial, and career goals. Reporting to the TRiO-SSS Project Director, the Coach will also assume responsibility for event planning (e.g., retreats, staff travel) and conduct workshops aligned with the project’s plan of operation. This position is full-time with benefits and is grant-funded through August of 2020 with funding renewable based on project performance. 


Required Education

Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred in Education, Counseling, Student Affairs, Curriculum and Instruction, Psychology, or a related field; Preferred: Specialized training in academic coaching/ advising and postsecondary retention programming.


Required Experience

  • One year working directly with students to promote academic success.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting academic needs of students facing barriers to educational success through academic coaching/advising, counseling, instruction, advocacy, and/or education.
  • Preferred: Prior service with TRIO program.
  • Preferred: Life experience with barriers similar to those from TRIO populations, including but not limited to being a member of an underrepresented group in higher education, being a first-generation student, being from a low-income family, or having a disability.
  • Preferred: Employee supervision and event-planning experience.


Primary Duties/Essential Functions

  • Coordinate with other offices in developing processes to support participants and track their involvement in services such as career counseling and tutoring.
  • Provide direct student support through academic success coaching for an assigned roster of participants.
  • Contact students regularly to discuss goal setting and enhancing time management, study skills, self-advocacy, academic success strategies, available campus support resources, and broader topics holistically impacting the student (e.g., financial concerns, caregiving responsibilities, and learning what questions to ask to successfully navigate a university system).
  • Develop Individualized Success Plans based on assessment battery and, through collaboration with participants, identify needs and track growth, development, and involvement with support resources.
  • Educate students (e.g., through workshops and one-on-one coaching) to prioritize their academic work, develop a clear vision of their goals, recognize connections between their daily activities and long-term goals, and apply these strategies to overcome barriers to academic success.
  • Maintain appropriate assessment and advising records for participants.
  • Maintain electronic timekeeping as it applies to the scope of this position, and support maintenance of effort tracking for campus partner time commitments.
  • Plan events (e.g., workshops, retreats, staff travel) in alignment with the TRiO-SSS plan of operation.
  • Maintain regular, punctual attendance as required by the supervisor based on department needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.



  • Knowledge of U.S. Department of Education TRIO programs or similar programs providing college access services to individuals from populations with identified socioeconomic disadvantages.
  • Knowledge of financial aid terminology, FAFSA filing requirements, types of federal student loans, and loan rehabilitation.
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional, collaborative, and service-oriented relationships within Azusa Pacific University.
  • Leadership ability and strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage details and accurately track data on student participation in the project.
  • Must be collaborative and an effective team member.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of college access and educational advising issues such as securing scholarships, major and course selection, and graduate/professional school application and admission, and experience working with individuals to promote financial and economic literacy.

  • Hearing and speaking on the telephone.
  • Meetings may require traveling to various campus offices.
  • Ability to pull, push, bend, grasp, reach, and lift up to 20 lbs.

  • Computer monitor and reading.

  • Microsoft Office and Google App proficiency; Preferred: PeopleSoft proficiency



  • Grade 7: $19.49 - $25.33/hour
