Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nationwide Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Palm Springs South Coast Field Office is seeking FOUR Recreation Technician Interns to dedicate a minimum of 31-32 weeks to work in support of the Palm Springs South Coast Field Office. Intern will also have the opportunity to serve within the Santa Rosa San Jacinto Mountain National Monument Visitor Center.

BLM California's Palm Springs-South Coast Field Office ("PSSCFO") manages a complex variety of public lands: about 3.6 million acres, including 1.7 million surface (more than the State of Delaware) and 1.9 million subsurface. The office serves a diverse public: home to more than 22 million people and host to millions of annual visits. The PSSCFO stretches from the Pacific Ocean to the Colorado River and from the international border with Mexico to where the mountains meet the Mojave Desert: an area larger than the State of Maryland.  Renewable energy, recreation, and conservation drive PSSCFO's multiple-use and sustained-yield programming. The office carries out the BLM mission by way of strong partnerships, including the most annual volunteer hours of any BLM California field office. PSSCFO's workload includes multiple utility-scale solar and wind projects, an ever-expanding number of visitors and varieties of ways to experience and enjoy America's public lands, and year-round operations to protect lives, property, and resources through robust and integrated fire and law enforcement programs.  The office manages fourteen Wilderness areas, fourteen Areas of Critical Environmental Concern ("ACECs"), all or part of four National Monuments (Sand to Snow, Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains, California Coastal, and Mojave Trails), and three National Scenic and Historic Trails (the world-famous Pacific Crest Trail, and the historic Juan Bautista de Anza and Old Spanish trails).

Living Allowance: $700/wk. Living Stipend provided for food and incidentals.

Housing: Housing is not provided by ACE or the BLM. Intern's schedule will be generally 40/hrs. a week, but is flexible and based on the needs of the BLM.


Position Description: The BLM PSSCFO is currently working on a number of projects with the California OHV commission's Grant program to help monitor, sign, and maintain routes in the limited use areas of the field office. The PSSCFO outdoor recreation planner, in coordination with the field office resources staff need to identify areas with route maintenance needs in support of OHV planning activities and projects.  The intern will be mentored to perform the full range of aid type duties and a variety of technical duties in support of recreation programs. Intern may serve as a crewmember and occasionally crew lead for specific projects.

Performs the following or duties of similar complexity:

  • Performs on-the- ground inventories of routes of travel and maintenance needs, analyzes the data and reports the findings for soil monitoring reports; determines factors such as type of maintenance needed for restoration. Performs on-the- ground surveys of route inventories, and prepares reports and makes recommendations to management on the findings.
  • Conducts compliance checks on campgrounds and evaluates effectiveness of kiosk signing messaging. Keeps kiosks updated with current information. Interacts with campground visitors to develop best management practices for visitor information.
  • Plans, aids in designing, and lays out projects for recreation site improvement.
  • Enters and retrieves data from automated databases.
  • To perform duties of this position requires the use of motor vehicles. In most cases this will be a 4-wheel drive vehicle or ATV.

Projects Goals: The overall goals of this internship is to identify trails and restoration projects throughout the Desert.  Recreation intern will assist in inventories for both authorized and unauthorized trails. Develop, design and implement restoration and signage efforts to curb impacts from illegal OHV incursions. Collaborate with partners to facilitate resource education and protection. Address trails issues as they occur.  Increase the BLM's presence at our long-term visitor areas (LTVA) by interacting with campground hosts and the camping public.  The intern be based out of the Palm Springs Field Office.  The intern will gain experience assisting The Outdoor Recreation Planner with duties between the field and the office. The intern must be willing to perform physical labor while being exposed to summer heat and winter rains, desert wildlife and plants, remote project areas, and other potential hazards commensurate with land management activities. The intern will facilitate on many aspects of recreation resource management including data collection, monitoring, and reporting.  Duties will be divided between field inventory; recordation, monitoring, evaluation, project documentation, research, and plan development.  The intern will conduct compliance checks on campgrounds and evaluate effectiveness of kiosk signing messaging. Keep kiosks updated with current information. Interact with campground visitors to develop best management practices for visitor information.


Qualifications: Applicants must have a minimum of or in progress of an undergraduate degree in Recreation, Natural Resource Management or other related discipline appropriate to the position. A combination of relevant education and appropriate experience is also acceptable. Resumes must contain enough information to show that the applicant meets the experience as defined in the position description. We are looking for determined, strong, and developing natural resource managers who are looking for experience working with land management agencies.

This opportunity will require time outdoors and field work that is often under somewhat rigorous physical conditions.  Applicants must also meet the following criteria: 1). Pass a DOI security background check 2). Valid Drivers License 3). Pass Defensive Driving Course.

 Requirements:

  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident;
  • Between the age of 18 and 35;
  • A valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to provide such documentation; Driving Record check will be completed during on-boarding process. (Interns must be 21+ to drive agency vehicles);
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a Federal criminal background check;
  • Use of a personal vehicle is highly suggested. Personal vehicle will not be used for work related purposes. 
  • Experience/Background in recreation, and have a deep interest in public land management and respect for nature
  • Must be willing and able to perform the above fieldwork and project duties as listed above
  • Comfortable hiking cross country in a rugged environment one day and spending the next at a computer
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and participate effectively in collaborative efforts 
  • Familiarity with California Desert environments a plus, or comfortable with hot, arid desert conditions
  • Applicants are expected to be HIGHLY motivated and on occasion, be able to perform assigned duties with little direct supervision
  • Ability to collect GPS data to be moved into GIS and data management reports
  • Strong background and interest in Public Lands and Federal Policy
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and participate effectively in collaborative efforts
  • English proficiency
