The success of any Army mission can depend on keeping automotive and heavy equipment in good working condition. Construction Equipment Repairers maintain and repair trucks, bulldozers, power shovels and other equipment needed for construction operations. Construction Equipment Repairers are responsible for maintaining construction equipment that's used for earthmoving, grading, and compaction; lifting and loading; quarrying and rock crushing; asphalt and concrete mixing and surfacing; water pumping; air compression and pneumatic tools; and power bridging. Some of your duties as a Construction Equipment Repairer may include:

* Maintain and replace brake actuators, batteries, starter motors, alternators, mechanical fuel pumps, hydraulic cylinders/pumps/control valves
* Maintain and replace drive shafts, universal joints, service brake shoes, disc-brake pads, water pumps, turbochargers
* Maintain and replace cylinder heads, high-pressure fuel injection pumps, wheel bearings/seals, and steering unit torque link and road wheels
* Adjust engine speed governor/valves, carburetors, boom-hoist brakes/clutches, dry-disc clutches, steering brakes, track tension/assemblies, fuel injector racks, and steering unit brake levers
* Charge suspension accumulators, transmission shift accumulators and main hydraulic accumulators

Skills / Requirements

Job training for a Construction Equipment Repairer requires nine weeks of Basic Training, where you'll learn basic Soldiering skills, and eight weeks of Advanced Individual Training. Part of this time is spent in the classroom and part in the field. Some of the skills you'll learn are:

* Engine repair and tune-up
* Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems
* Repair and replace body panels, fenders and radiators
* Troubleshoot hydraulic systems

Helpful attributes include:

* An interest in math, electricity and shop mechanics
* An ability to use tools
* An interest in electric motors and appliances
* An interest in solving problems

Advanced level Construction Equipment Repairers provide guidance, supervises and trains other Soldiers within the same discipline. As an advanced level Construction Equipment Repairer, you may be involved in:

* Troubleshoot, repair and overhaul engines, final drives, power trains, hydraulic systems and fuel system components
* Perform welding and cutting in order to accomplish repairs
* Supervise and inspect maintenance of construction, powered bridging and associated equipment

The skills you learn as a Construction Equipment Repairer will help prepare you for a civilian career at service stations, auto and construction equipment dealers, farm equipment companies and state highway agencies. You might consider a future as a garage mechanic, carburetor mechanic, transmission mechanic, radiator mechanic, construction equipment mechanic or endless track vehicle mechanic.
