As one of the largest ground forces in the world, the U.S. Army needs to make sure that all forces can get the correct information. The Army communications maintenance team is responsible for making sure that all communications equipment is in top working order. This equipment allows the Army to track and direct troop, aircraft and ship movements. An Avionic Radar Repairer is an essential member of the Army communications maintenance team and is primarily responsible for performing field and sustainment level maintenance on avionic navigation flight control systems, stabilization systems, equipment which operates using radar principles and aircraft survivability equipment. Some of your duties as an Avionic Radar Repairer may include:

* Maintain, test and repair communication equipment
* Install and repair circuits and wiring
* Calibrate and align equipment components
* Test and isolate faulty assemblies and components
* Replace parts, rewire equipment, and interconnect components on semiautomatic telephone switchboard equipment
* Use circuit and wire diagrams and schematics
* Test repaired equipment

Skills / Requirements

Job training for an Avionic Radar Repairer requires nine weeks of Basic Training, where you'll learn basic Soldiering skills, and 28 weeks, three days of Advanced Individual Training and on-the-job instruction, including practice in repairing radar and sonar equipment. Part of this time is spent in the classroom and part in the field. Some of the skills you'll learn are:

* The application of electronic principles and concepts
* Inspection techniques and procedures
* Use of electrical and electronic test equipment
* Repair and replacement of radar and sonar equipment

Helpful attributes include:

* Interest in mathematics and physics
* Interest in working with electrical and electronic equipment
* Ability to apply electronic principles and concepts

Advanced level Avionic Radar Repairers provide guidance, supervise and train other Soldiers within the same discipline. As an advanced level Avionic Radar Repairer, you may be involved in:

* Perform complex maintenance tasks on malfunctioning equipment
* Assist in the installation and repair of wire equipment
* Prepare and maintain technical and administrative shop records and bench stock
* Interpret circuit diagrams and schematics
* Compute voltage, amperage and resistance factors
* Conduct inspections of repaired equipment

The skills you learn, as an Avionic Radar Repairer will certainly prepare you for a future with civilian engineering companies, the federal government or aircraft and military hardware manufacturers.

Through your extensive Army training and experience and some additional study, you may be able to qualify for Electronics Technician Association (ETA) certification as an Associate Certified Electronics Technician, Journeyman-Avionics Electronics Technician, Journeyman-Network Systems or a Journeyman-Radar Electronics Technician.
