Accurate information is crucial for planning and managing Army hospital operations. Patient Administration Specialists make sure that hospital and patient information is recorded, stored and delivered in order to keep everything running as smoothly as possible. The Patient Administration Specialist is primarily responsible for supervising and performing administrative duties in the patient administration division of an Army hospital or other medical facilities. Some of your duties as a Patient Administration Specialist may include:

* Compile data and prepare required statistical report on outpatient visits, inpatient visits, admissions, dispositions, and other selected workload area
* Prepare reports and data on births, deaths, and reportable conditions for submission to military and civilian authorities
* Initiate correspondence pertaining to medical records, medical board proceedings, line of duty investigations, and other records and reports pertaining to patient administration
* Possess working knowledge of patient medical eligibility programs such as DEERS
* Prepare and consolidate medical documents and files authorized documents ensuring proper sequencing of forms
* Apply knowledge of medical terminology as it applies to anatomy and physiology
* Prepare medical records for retirement
* Assist in the preparation of medical information for release
* Maintain a medical record tracking system within the medical treatment facility
* Process patients for admission to medical facilities
* Perform administrative duties and prepares appropriate forms to process and report very seriously ill and seriously ill personnel
* Account for and safeguard funds received for deposit in medical services account
* Prepare patient and associated documentation for medical evacuation

Skills / Requirements

Job training for a Patient Administration Specialist requires nine weeks of Basic Training, where you'll learn basic Soldiering skills, and seven weeks of Advanced Individual Training, including practice in various office functions. Some of the skills you'll learn are:

* English grammar, spelling and punctuation
* Typing and clerical skills
* Setting up and maintaining filing and publication systems
* Preparing forms and correspondence in military style

Helpful attributes include:

* An interest in English, mathematics, business administration and typing
* An interest in keeping organized and accurate records
* A preference for office work
* An interest in operating typewriters, computers and other office equipment

Advanced level Patient Administration Specialist provides guidance, supervises and trains other Soldiers within the same discipline. As an advanced level Patient Administration Specialist, you may be involved in:

* Perform medical administrative duties in various departments or services of hospitals
* Post administrative entries in medical records
* Schedule patients for medical board action
* Monitor long-term patient rosters
* Maintain patient workload data from subordinate services
* Audit medical records for quality control based on the nature of care and treatment given
* Release medical information, answer inquiries and provide information from medical records to requesting parties as authorized

There isn't an office anywhere that doesn't need a highly qualified administrative employee. Your Army training as an Patient Administration Specialist will be extremely valued in positions such as clerk typists, secretaries, general office clerks, administrative assistants or office managers, whether you choose to pursue a career in hospital administration or in another office environment.

With your extensive Army training and experience, as well as some additional study, you'll have the opportunity to qualify for certification with the American Medical Technologists as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).
