The Army fields a large force of M1 Abrams tanks that are an integral part of our warfighting capability. The Abrams Systems Maintainer is an integral member of the team that's responsible for keeping these weapons operating properly. The M-1 Abrams Tank System Maintainer is primarily responsible for supervising and performing maintenance on Abrams tanks. Some of your duties as an M-1 Abrams Systems Maintainer may include: * Diagnose and troubleshoot malfunctions * Perform organizational maintenance and on-board direct support tasks on the suspension systems, steering systems, hydraulic systems, auxiliary power units, fire extinguisher/suppression systems, gas particulate systems * Perform organizational maintenance vehicular mounted armament, gun turret drive system and the fire control system on the M1 tank Skills / Requirements
Job training for an M-1 Abrams Tank Systems Maintainer requires nine weeks of Basic Training, where you'll learn basic Soldiering skills, and 14 weeks of Advanced Individual Training. Part of this time is spent in the classroom and part in the field. Some of the skills you'll learn are: * Electronic and mechanical principles and concepts * Use of electronic, electrical and mechanical test equipment * Use of schematics, drawings and wiring diagrams * Operation, testing and maintenance of weapons systems Helpful attributes include: * An interest in science and math * An interest in working with electronic or electrical equipment * An ability to do work requiring accuracy and attention to detail * An interest in working with diesel and turbine engines Advanced level M-1 Abrams Tank Systems Maintainers provide guidance, supervises and trains other Soldiers within the same discipline. As an advanced level M-1 Abrams Tank Systems Maintainer, you may be involved in: * Diagnose and correct malfunctions of various subsystems, performs on-board direct support tasks i.e., major assembly replacement * Assist Soldiers with troubleshooting and maintenance tasks on the M1 tank * Supervise recovery operations and performs battlefield damage assessment and repair (BDAR) * Supervise the inspection and troubleshooting of M1 Abrams automotive and armament systems The skills you learn as an M-1 Abrams Tank System Maintainer will help prepare you for a future as an electronic mechanic, an avionics technician or a missile facilities repairer with civilian firms that design, build and test weapons for the military. * Armament Repairer (91K) * Artillery Mechanic (91P) * Fire Control Repairer (91G) * Bradley Fighting Vehicle System Maintainer (91M) * Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic (91B) Learn more about the relationship between military training and civilian certification requirements.
