Solid, dependable leadership is crucial to success of any organization, and the U.S. Army is no exception. The Chief Medical Non-commissioned Officer serves as the principal non-commissioned officer who supervises, and performs related duties as the senior advisor to Commanders, Directors, and Chiefs of Departments and staff agencies on all matters pertaining to enlisted personnel. They perform these duties in multifunctional medical and dental treatment facilities, medical staff activities, or in medical units. A Chief Medical NCO's job is to ensure the proper communications between subordinates and superiors. It is at this leadership level that almost all unit operations merge. Additional responsibilities may include:

* Supervise operation of organizations performing supply and related service operations.
* Supervise preparation of orders, operating instructions, reports, and related technical materials.
* Plan, coordinate and supervise activities pertaining to unit organization, training, tactical and technical operations.
* Perform liaison between staff and supported soldiers to improve effectiveness of support activities.

Skills / Requirements

Chief Medical NCO's training includes completion of the First Sergeant Course, where you will learn to perform the duties of a Battalion Command First Sergeant. The First Sergeant Course includes subjects on unit administration, communicative skills, discipline and morale, logistics and maintenance, personnel management, physical training, security, tactical operations, and training management.

Being a leader in the Army requires certain qualities. A leader exhibits self-discipline, initiative, confidence and intelligence. They are physically fit and can perform under physical and mental pressures. Leaders make decisions quickly, always focusing on completing the mission successfully, and showing respect for their subordinates and other military officers. Leaders lead from the front and adjust to environments that are always changing. They are judged by their ability to make decisions on their own and bear ultimate moral responsibility for those decisions.

The skills you learn as a Chief Medical NCO will help prepare you for a future with civilian hospitals, clinics, nursing homes or rehabilitation centers. With a Chief Medical NCO background, you may consider a career as a medical and health services manager. The leadership skills you acquire as a Chief Medical NCO will help you in many types of civilian careers. A Chief Medical NCO in the Army is most closely related to a vital manager in medical and health services organizations such as hospitals and clinics.
