The Avionic Mechanic performs unit and intermediate maintenance on tactical communications security (COMSEC), communication, navigation, identification friend or foe, and flight control equipment. Some of your duties as an Avionic Mechanic may include:

* Repair, replace and perform operational and maintenance checks and alignments on aircraft flight controls, stabilization systems, avionics and controlled cryptographic equipment
* Troubleshoot equipment and traces avionic and cryptographic equipment wiring harnesses using technical manuals and schematic drawings to diagnose and isolate faults and effect repairs
* Perform maintenance on special and common hand tools and test, measurement and diagnostic equipment
* Requisition and maintain shop and bench stock for repair of aircraft avionics equipment
* Prepare forms and records related to aircraft maintenance

Skills / Requirements

Job training for a Avionic Mechanic requires nine weeks of Basic Training, where you'll learn basic Soldiering skills, and 25 weeks Advanced Individual Training and on-the-job instruction. Part of the time is spent in the classroom and part in the field. Some of the skills you learn are:

* Restore avionic systems, and subsystems, to include troubleshooting and repair of aircraft wiring on communications, navigation, stabilization, and night vision imaging systems
* Basic electronics theory
* Common soldering and systems installation practices with use of associated tools and test equipment

Helpful attributes include:

* An interest in shop mechanics
* An interest in work involving aircraft
* Ability to work as a member of a team
* Ability to perform a wide variety of duties

Advanced level Avionic Mechanic provides guidance, supervises and trains other Soldiers within the same discipline. As an advanced level Avionic Mechanic, you may also be involved in:

* Schedule maintenance on test, measurement, and diagnostic equipment
* Alter or modify material according to DA approved modification work orders

The skills you learn as an Avionic Mechanic will help prepare you for a future with commercial airlines, aircraft maintenance firms, aircraft manufacturers or other organizations that might have fleets of airplanes or helicopters.

* Aircraft Powerplant Repairer (15B)
* Aircraft Powertrain Repairer (15D)
* Aircraft Structural Repairer (15G)
* OH-58D / ARH Armament/Electrical/Avionics Systems Repairer (15J)
