Electronic instruments are used in all areas of the Army, including health care, weather forecasting, flight control and combat. The Air Traffic Control Equipment Repairer is an important member of the Army electronic maintenance team. Electronic instrument repairers fix and maintain electronics, such as measuring equipment, navigational controls and photographic equipment. The Air Traffic Control (ATC) Equipment Repairer performs or supervises field and sustainment level maintenance and installation of air traffic control communications, navigation aids (NAVAIDS), and landing systems. Some of your duties as an Air Traffic Control Equipment Repairer may include:

* Test instruments, navigational controls and simulators using electronic and electrical test equipment
* Read technical diagrams and manuals in order to locate, isolate and repair instrument parts
* Replace equipment parts such as resistors, switches and circuit boards
* Perform quality control measures
* Install and adjust air traffic control communications and navigation aids systems
* Maintain air traffic control systems
* Maintain technical manuals and instructional materials for the repair of air traffic control communication systems

Skills / Requirements

Job training for an Air Traffic Control Equipment Repairer requires nine weeks of Basic Training, where you'll learn basic Soldiering skills, and 37 weeks Advanced Individual Training and on-the-job instruction, including classroom instruction, including practice in repairing and replacing equipment parts. Part of this time is spent in the classroom and part in the field. Some of the skills you'll learn are:

* Electronic principles and concepts
* Use of test equipment
* Equipment repair exercises

Helpful attributes include:

* Interest in mathematics
* Interest in electronic equipment
* Ability to do work requiring accuracy and attention to detail
* Interest in solving problems

Advanced level Air Traffic Control Equipment Repairers provide guidance, supervises and trains other Soldiers within the same discipline. As an advanced level Air Traffic Control Equipment Repairer, you may be involved in:

* Manage calibration, quality assurance, and quality control programs for maintenance facilities
* Coordinate maintenance and repair of ATC equipment
* Coordinate with organizations and contractors for maintenance support and assistance
* Prepare technical reports on ATC equipment

The skills you learn as an Air Traffic Control Equipment Repairer could help you pursue a civilian career with manufacturing companies, medical research facilities, satellite communications firms or commercial airline companies.
