About Us
The Inland Coalition Advancing Diversity and Education in Health Careers focuses around three work groups:
Work Group #1 - K-12 interest group – would involve both in and out of school programs and encourage collaboration between the two sectors. Establishing new programs and connect existing programs for youth. Would also work to address the 9th into 10th grade large leak in the pipeline.
Work Group #2 - College/University group to work on post-high school programs, including addressing some of the broad issues of the complexity of the application process, fixing the 2nd big leak of low transfer from community college to 4 year institutions, retention of students through support programs, etc.
Work Group #3 - Policy and Awareness group to work on projects such as MIIS, act as the press liaison, work with organizations e.g. Campaign for College Opportunity to coordinate events with members from #1 and #2 above.
Why We Are Here
California’s growing and diverse population, coupled with unprecedented high school
drop out rates and looming retirement of experienced professionals, has created a
workforce crisis in all health related fields.
• The state will face a shortfall of up to 17,000 physicians by 2015.
• California’s health workforce does not reflect the ethnic diversity of its citizens.
• Latinos, African Americans, and Native Americans are significantly underrepresented among health sciences students and faculty.
• The demand for culturally and linguistically competent health providers is growing, fueled by increasing need.
To improve access to care, reduce disparities in health status, and improve health
outcomes in the most diverse state in the nation, the time to establish solutions is now.
