WLALA'S MISSION STATEMENT

The Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles ("WLALA") is dedicated to promoting the full participation of women lawyers and judges in the legal profession, maintaining the integrity of our legal system by advocating principles of fairness and equality, improving the status of women in our society including their exercise of equal rights and reproductive choice, and actively working towards the furtherance of these goals through WLALA's committees, sections and activities.

Benefits of Membership
Membership Benefit Criteria
- Advancing the interests of women attorneys in every area of legal practice. Our Business Law, Criminal Justice, Family Law, and Litigation Sections address relevant issues and provide useful substantive programs to our members. These sections provide excellent networking opportunities for women.
- Pro Bono legal services for women in need. WLALA members can volunteer their services through the Jail Project, the Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law, the Adoption Project, and the Domestic Violence Project, as well as support the Downtown Women's Center, Break the Cycle, and WLALA's mentoring and scholarship projects. Few other organizations have as much direct impact on the lives of women in need.
- Women addressing women's issues. Our members play an extremely important role in defining and analyzing women's issues and advocating on behalf of women in the workplace and community at large. We review legislation, interview and evaluate candidates for judicial and other appointive office, prepare amicus briefs, defend the right to choose through our Legislation, Appointive Office, Amicus Briefs, and Pro-Choice and Reproductive Rights Committees.
- Professional development. WLALA's Mentoring Committee, Business Development Committee, and Membership Directory. Our Mentoring Program matches new attorneys with more experienced practitioners to provide support and advice.
- Regular meetings to discuss issues important to women, women attorneys, and the community at large. Our monthly membership meetings feature prominent lawyers and judges as well as community and national leaders. WLALA has hosted meetings with Janet Reno, Dianne Feinstein, Barbara Boxer, Loretta Sanchez and Gray Davis.
- Socializing at special events. Members enjoy many special events, such as receptions for judges, our annual holiday parties at the Downtown Women's Center, Hollywood Bowl night, women's sporting events (L.A. Sparks), and a gala wine-tasting/silent auction (like this summer's "WLALApalooza" event at the Adobe Gilmore Center).
