The Need
The Los Angeles Urban League’s ultimate goal for the education tier of its Neighborhoods@ Work Initiative is to ensure that our students are socially and academically prepared to graduate high school on time, work-ready and college-eligible. Studies indicate that student engagement in alternative school programs, such as internships, reinforce and complement schools’ academic programs as well as improve overall grades. Furthermore, participation in internships, work placement and community service opportunities helps young people acquire the skills, knowledge and experience needed to prepare for and actively participate in the local and global economy.
A Solution Beginning June 2007 the Los Angeles Urban League will launch “Operation Summer Experience”, a series of summer internships, work placement and community service opportunities.
“Operation Summer Experience” Layout Time Frame: Students will engage in working internships/ community service opportunities over the course of 8 weeks beginning June 30 th , 2007 concluding August 22 nd , 2007.
Duties: Over the course of the 8 weeks, students will work 30-40hours per week answering phones, filing, copying, making labels, stuffing envelopes, entering data as well as any other pertinent duties seen fit.
How to Get Involved Ø Resume Writers and Reviewers Needed for April 12 th Work Readiness workshop for Students. Ø Office Sponsorship o Contribute to the positive image of your company and its exposure to the incoming labor pool by sponsoring a high school student in your office. Internships like these assist students in developing goals and acquiring the necessary skills to achieve those goals.
