Picture yourself on graduation day, diploma in hand, looking forward to embarking on that long-awaited career of your dreams. Now imagine yourself applying for a professional position,, only to be told you lack work experience. A large number of college students are avoiding this trap. The take action and work while completing their college degrees. While you are in school, here are a few tips to consider before you graduate.
Internships can help you utilize the skills and knowledge you have acquired throughout your college career. You can also learn new skills while on the job under the supervision of a mentor. Most companies assign mentors to interns in order for them to develop a better understanding of projects and skills needed to complete various tasks. This type of environment is especially useful for students who attend universities and colleges that emphasize theory rather than 'hands on' experience because they are able to get a better sense of what the work environment is really like. During your internship, you might have an opportunity to work with other employees and other interns. By working with others, you are able to make connections with other co-workers. These connections may be beneficial later when you need references. . When you volunteer, you often gain professional work experience. Some Human Resource Professionals feel when you volunteer you demonstrates impressive motivation, commitment, and social responsibility. The decision to work or not to work is definitely yours but if you chose to work while you are in college, utilize all resources available to you especially your Campus Career Services Center or Student Employment Office. Your Counselors are knowledgeable and can help with your job search. The can also help you with improving your resume and cover letter. One thing is certain, students who work part-time or who complete an internship during their college career are likely to be start their career upon graduation. Don't forget to add you volunteer work Internships Develop Work Skills

I saw your comment and wanted to respond. As I mentioned in this article, Employers are looking for experience. Some of the benefits to internships include gaining experience to put on your resume; networking opportunities and hopefully employement at the end.
By the time I graduated from college, I had a job. And that was because I had interships. I was also involved with a lot associations in HR. It was a great way to network. If you do join, be sure to say you are a student so you can get student rates.
In response to internships- I have been wanting an internship since I began my schooling at FIDM and have been in contact and been offered several. However, it is my understanding that now, the government has put regulations that no one person may have an unpaid internship in other words, working for free, without going through their school. unfortunately FIDM does not allow internships until second year last quarter, but I was wondering- is this really true? What about those who do not attend school? It really threw me off because I agree with everything you have said and would love to just gain as much experience as possible!
