Blog Post: Recent Job Loss?

posted Monday, December 15, 2008 2:56 PM

With the employment rate rising and companies declaring bankruptcy left and right, there is much fear amongst our society for one's career. If you or someone you know is experiencing job loss, try these 4 steps towards obtaining the ideal career for you:

1) Create a Vision - It starts with your mind. I ask all my clients, "Where do you see yourself in 5 - 10 years?" I am astonished by how many people are clueless. I'm not saying you need to write a detailed 5 - 10 year plan for yourself, but you should have a general idea about your future. Vision is direction. Jot down a couple of ideas about where you would like to see yourself in the future. Meanwhile set some short-term goals to get you on the right path. If you want to be "successful," you have to create a target!

2) Find your Passion - Everyone is passionate about something. Your interests are unique to you. Why not include areas you enjoy when it comes to career development? If you're going to eventually get paid to work 40 hours a week, shouldn't it be at least something you like doing? If America is the true land of opportunity, why not think outside of the box when it comes to your career? Do what you love.

3) Work your Strengths - The main culprit of poor job performance is lack of motivation. The reason why people are not motivated is because they are not able to do what they are good at on the job. Think about it. We always hear, "Work on your weaknesses and one day they will become strengths." Although, we should try to improve in all areas, let's be realistic here. We are only talented in a few. That means the natural ability to excel because of a skill you possess. The trick is, you need to find what those 2 - 3 areas are. It's very motivating to do something you're good at and get recognized for it.

4) Work! - This may sound like a no-brainer, but if you are either experiencing unemployment or lack of job fulfillment, it's time to move forward! Even if you create a vision, find your passions and utilize your strengths, you still have to learn, build connections and apply for positions. People cringe when it comes to change in their lives, but sometimes the change is necessary. Ask for help. Get on the internet. Update your resume. There is no "formula" to obtaining the ideal job, but good 'ol perseverance doesn't hurt!

I think number 4) is a little bit ridiculous with 17.5% real unemployment. There are millions of people who are literally unable to "work". That means they have sent out hundreds or resumes online to employers and recruiters with no response. These people have paid to have their resumes updated, worked LinkedIn and all other avenues to no avail. It's not a personal problem, it's a weakness in economic policy when individuals with advanced degrees are offering to work for minimum wage or even for free and companies are too saturated with offers to even care.
