Blog Post: Leaving a Summer Job – exit with a good last impression
posted Tuesday, September 1, 2009
You bought a new backpack, your new dorm assignment came in the mail, and now it is time to get back to your studies. If you took a summer job, this may also be the time to think about your exit strategy. Here are some tips to help your seasonal work have a lasting effect on your successful career:
1. Make sure your employer knows at least two weeks before your last day, sooner if they need it for their scheduling. 2. Thank them for the opportunity and let them know what you liked about working there. 3. Ask for a letter of recommendation. 4. If you really liked working there, and there are locations near your school, ask for the opportunity to continue to work with the employer in another location. 5. Keep the door open. Let them know that you may be interested in coming back next summer or on breaks (stay in touch with the employer and let them know how you are doing). You never know, you could need a little extra spending money over the Holidays or need work the following summer.
