Blog Post: It's Job Fair Season!
posted Thursday, May 1, 2008 12:57 PM
I'm sitting here in Torrance at Westwood College job fair. Everyone in community relations is devoting a significant amount of time right now to attending job fairs... so we kinda know what we are talking about. This has been a great event, lots of high profile employers and lots of bright-eyed job seekers! I want to just take a minute, however to remind everyone how best to "work" a job fair.
By now you know the Jobing.com Career Expo is just over a week away on May 8th at the Los Angeles Convention Center... so you've got some time to prepare. First of all, before you arrived go on to the site and identify the employers you want to speak with. Once you figure out which companies you are interested in do some research. It's so easy now to learn about different companies. Just go onto their website and read all about them. That way you can confidently approach them with lots to talk about. Next remember you only get one chance to make a great first impression. When in doubt go conservative - khaki slacks and a white shirt for the guys and a suit or business casual for the girls. Make sure you are professionally groomed - clean and fresh... If your suit needs to be pressed take care of it before the event. Next, your resume. Is it updated? Have you had someone look at it for spelling errors and typos? It is so important to have a perfect resume... Can't stress it enough! Ok so you've got your resume, your suit is looking sharp, you did your research and you're ready to walk in the door. Take a minute to get pumped up. Give yourself a little pepe talk... head up, shoulders back - big smile and your off. Nothing attracts people more than a genuine smile. So go for it! When you approach the potential employer give them your best smile and a hand shake... not hard!!! not Not soft either! Don't be afraid to ask questions... They are hear to meet you and tell you all about why they are an employer of choice and nothing makes you stand out from the crowd more that asking smart direct questions. Make sure you grab a business card of the person you met and any other information to help you when you get that call back and hopefully an interview. When you leave make list of who you need to send a note to and let them know you will follow up with a phone call. Now go get that job!!
