Blog Post: Manufacturing Remains an Attractive Career Option in Orange County

posted Wednesday, April 23, 2008 5:55 PM

While millions of jobs, making everything from textiles to steel,
have moved to other countries, such as China in recent years, the
precision manufacturing industry remains a crucial niche in the
United States as well as locally here in Orange County. A typical
manufacturing job pays about $60,000 a year, according to manufacturing
industry figures, a premium of about 25% over positions found in
the service industries. At some companies, a general machinist will
start at $9 an hour, rising to $14.50 an hour after a certain training
periodand going up to the mid- to high-$20/hr range for senior machinists,
who can earn nearly $70,000 a year.

Manufacturing remains an attractive career option in Orange County.
The U.S. Labor Department wrote in a study "Too few young people
consider manufacturing careers and often are unaware of the skills
needed in an advanced environment." That shortage of skilled workers
is likely to worsen over time as baby boomers retire
but are replaced with ever decreasing numbers of
skilled manufacturing workers to take their place. A
recent study released by the National Association of
Manufacturers and the Manufacturing Institute, reports
that 81% of American manufacturers say their biggest
problem is finding qualified skilled workers. If this problem isn't
fixed in the foreseeable future, the report states it
will severely impact our nation's economic
well-being. Opportunities exist in the Manufacturing
Industry for Machinists, Computer
Numerical Control (CNC) Specialist/Lathe, CNC Miller, Mold Makers,
Tool and Die Makers, and Press Operators, Quality Control
Inspectors, Assemblers, Technicians, Industrial Engineers and others.
