The Opportunity of a Lifetime!

In the last 15 years, Motivating the Teen Spirit (MTS) has proven that it is part of the solution to the growing confusion and pressure our youth are facing worldwide.  As of June 2008, we have served over 110,000 teens, prevented more than 3,000 teen suicides, influenced 850 teen dropouts to return to school, and reconnected thousands of teens with their families.  And the numbers keep climbing!

Our experiential workshops help teens learn how to love themselves, communicate more effectively, and make integrity-based decisions. They learn by doing and practice the tools and skills they need to go back to their lives and create success -- manage the pressures they're facing, modify the behaviors that have been keeping them from success, and achieve their goals.

This program will change your teen's life!

If you have a moment, please watch our video presentation at www.MotivatingTheTeenSpirit.com  to get a deeper understanding of what we do and how we do it!

Does It Really Work? Does It Really Last?

These are some of the questions Andy McIntosh, a regular op-ed columnist for the Californian newspaper and youth advocate, asked himself while he participated in our June workshop. I am grateful for all that he added to the room with his presence, and for the wonderful three-part article he wrote after following up with teens who experienced our Safe Space that day. Thank you, Andy!

Please enjoy Andy's personal account of the transformation he witnessed.

Your Partner in Empowering the Next Generation,

Amanda Johnson

Highlights from Our Last Local Workshop

The 19 teens who joined us for the full-day workshop came from a variety of backgrounds.  Almost half of them came from a local homeless shelter, one was a victim referred to us by a rape crisis center, several were high-risk teens dealing with personal tragedies and trauma, and three were leadership teens dealing with the responsibilities and pressures that come with leadership.

At the end of one full-day workshop:
  • 88% of the teens said they felt less confused and angry
  • 88% said that they felt they could communicate more effectively with their peers and the adults in their lives as a result of this experience
  • All 5 of the teens who reported considering suicide prior to the workshop said that they no longer considered suicide an option
  • All 19 teens said they felt they had more access to their self-esteem as a result of the workshop
  • And ALL of them want to return for another full-day workshop!

Contact Amanda Johnson at 909.292.3330 or AmandaMTS114@yahoo.com for more information, or to register teens today!

It's Allied Health Professions Week - Watch this Video On Why This Could Be The Right Career Choice For You!

posted Tuesday, November 3, 2009 11:37 AM

It's Allied Health Professions Week (Nov. 1-7)  and the California Hospital Association just released this video that explains why we have shortages in these professions, which make up 60% of healthcare workers and include over 200 specialties.

Below is the information from the California Hospital Association...take a look!

CHA is pleased to announce the release of a brief educational video honoring allied health workers during Allied Health Professions week, November 1-7.  Sponsored by CHA and The California Endowment, the video is part of a larger effort being led by CHA’s Healthcare Workforce Coalition. The coalition was established by CHA in response to the need for a coordinated, statewide effort to develop and implement long-term strategies that will address allied health workforce shortages in the state.

The release of the video coincides with Allied Health Professions Week which is celebrated nationally and locally to honor health care providers working in the more than 200 allied health professions.  When most people think about health care, they think about doctors and nurses who provide care directly to patients.  However, there are many health care professionals working behind the scenes to provide laboratory, imaging and other critical services needed to diagnose and treat patients. This segment of the health care workforce, called allied health, comprises 60 percent of all health care providers.  Allied health professionals have a tremendous impact on health care delivery by supporting, facilitating and complementing the roles of physicians, nurses and other health care providers.

This video pays tribute to the important role that allied health professionals play in the delivery of health care, and emphasizes the long-term need for an adequate supply of qualified, diverse allied health professionals given California’s growing and aging population.

To view the video, visit the CHA website at http://www.calhospital.org/AlliedWorkforceVideo

Find out what THEY want and give them what THEY want

posted Monday, February 16, 2009 7:26 AM

Thank you Peggy for these great insights!  For more blogs from this author visitPeggy Wallace, Making Conversation, LLC.

It’s that easy. So why is it so darn difficult for you to effectively persuade someone in a job interview that you are their best hiring choice? You know in your heart that you would be perfect for the job; why can’t you explain that to them?

Before you go for the interview,

• Do your research. Be creative in seeking sources. Research them, their market conditions, advertising and public image. Know about their competitors. If you were buying the company or its stock, what would you want to know? It’s past, present and, most importantly, future.
• Reverse your mindset. Look at the job opportunity from THEIR perspective, THEIR needs and goals. Who are they? What would you accomplish in their first week? Month? Year? The more you find out about a job, its people and a company, the more facile you become in putting yourself in their shoes. So, really think about it. Visualize it.
• Act “as if” you own the challenges of the job. What will add to their bottom line profitability? Consider floating an idea by them as if you were already part of their team. You looked at the competition and you wondered based on the growing market for…. Have they considered….? Maybe they have; maybe they haven’t; but you are thinking as if you already worked there! I always notice when someone says “we” referring to a prior or current employer. The interviewer wants that buy-in and loyalty too.

During the interview maintain flexibility. Stay in the moment. No matter how much you may want to show off your research and ideas or tell them about yourself. Job descriptions change and unless you asked for the most recent one (always a good idea -ask HR), they still may be going in a different direction. So LISTEN to them, what they say and what they don’t say. Maybe what you thought they need is not what they think they need.

Remember, they are doing the hiring; follow their agenda, not your own. Confirm and explore what they need and want. If you know yourself and your strengths well enough, you can customize your story to clearly demonstrate that you meet their needs.

To learn more tips and techniques for better job search, interviewing, networking and overall communication skills results, contact  Peggy Wallace, Making Conversation LLC. (www.makingconversation.com).

Present your best self by being authentic and enthusiastically showing your own unique personality; open doors by winning with words.

The Childhood Connection To Careers

posted Friday, December 19, 2008 3:31 PM

Thanks Brett for this GREAT insight!

Brett Farmiloe, Pursue The Passion
There’s a strong connection between childhood interests and a current career. It’s something that I’m a victim of.  My favorite video game was Crusin’ USA while growing up.  And you wonder why I toured around the country ten years later

Those things that you enjoy as a kid, it’s amazing to see how they can come back later into your profession.

Here’s a collection of people we interviewed who have taken a childhood interest and turned it into their career.

Park Ranger: I’ve loved the outdoors since I was born.  Always have and always will.

Tattoo Artist: I envisioned having this job when I was a teenager.  When I was 13 and handpoked the very first dot on my wrist and wiped it away, and saw there was still a dot, I knew that’s what I wanted to do.

TV Host, Wild Kingdom: If I can step backwards a few years, as a child, my grandfather was a forester.  My childhood playground was 3600 acres of trees and wildlife.  My entire childhood was in wildlife, and in wild places.

Goat Farmer: When I was 15 I was trying to decide what I wanted to do. My mom asked me what I liked to do.  Because that’s where you always start.  ‘What do you like to do?’

We had woods behind our house and I’d spend a lot of time out there.  I’d say well, the only thing I know for sure is that I like to be outside.  She thought a minute and said, ‘Well, we all like to do that.  You’ll just have to get over it.’

So I decided to go into information systems which ended up being accounting.  I sat in an office for fifteen years trying to figure out how to get outside.  Then eventually I decided I needed to be outside.  Because what your passion is at 15 is more than likely going to be your passion when you’re 30.

President, Phoenix Suns: My passion comes more out of when I was a kid.  We used to gather all the cousins and relatives almost every weekend in a town north of Seattle called Mount Vernon .  All the cousins would use my grandparent’s driveway and garage as a stage.  The garage door would be the curtain.  We would put on shows for all the family every weekend.  Because I was the oldest cousin, I got to be the director and help put the show together and see the results of what we did.  I really think there’s as much as that drive in what I do today as there is my love of sports.

Director of Communications, Georgia Aquarium: For me, part of the reason of why I work here is when I was five years old growing up in Boston , I went to the New England Aquarium.  I picked up a horseshoe crab and touched it.  I still remember that and I love those types of engaging experiences that really register with you and stick with you.

Child Therapist: My parents got divorced when I was 13.  They forced me to go to a therapist.  For about a month I was totally against it.  Then I was like, ‘Wait a minute.  This person is totally objective and they’re just listening.’  I didn’t realize you could actually do that for a living.  That’s where it all started.

Jordan Footwear Designer: I started drawing shoes in the 7 th grade on little 3 x 5 index cards.  My teacher, her name is Mrs. Weathers.  She used to keep them.  I actually used to get in trouble because I was drawing instead of paying attention.

But I’ve been drawing ever since I can remember.  I just had a gift to be able to draw anything I could see.  For me, as the years got longer, I just started to channel it more and focus on drawing specific things.

Accountant: When I was a kid I used to watch the old westerns that were black and white.  There would be the guys in the white hats, who were the good guys, and then the guys in the black hats.  They’d fight against each other.  Now that I’m a CPA, I help young families and couples.  I look at myself as the guy in the white hat, and the IRS are the guys in the black hat.  My job is to help them keep as much of their money as they can and help them out.

President, Phoenix Suns: I think if you can honestly think back about what experiences led you to where you are, there’s big influences almost always in your childhood or early teen years.  You probably found something that you were drawn to or incredibly interested in or got great joy from.  If you’re lucky enough to parlay that into your career, you’ll almost inevitably be successful.

Brett Farmiloe wants to know what you think about presenting information using this type of writing style.  Does it peak your interest?  Make you want to read more?  Or does it just flat out suck?  Let him know by commenting below.  It will help him as he formulates a book about Pursue the Passion.
